Arts and craft movement : Arts and Crafts Movement

The Arts and Crafts Movement is the name given to a period of British decorative arts, architecture, and garden design, that is primarily associated with William Morris, Gertrude Jekyll[?], Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and artists in the Pre-Raphaelite movement. The inspiration for much of the movements ideas followed the writings of John Ruskin. It was part of the major English aesthetic movement of the last years of the 19th century, calling for simplicity and clear function and leading the reaction against Victorian overdecoration and also against industrial production as opposed to hand crafts.

It was a foundation for such other movements as Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and Bauhaus. It influenced architecture, crafts, art, and town planning. In the United States, it spawned complimentary and sympathetic movements such as Mission, Prairie, and Craftsman. Arts and Crafts was an early influence on Frank Lloyd Wright.
