Blaine County is a county located in the U.S. State of Montana. As of 2000, the population is 7,009. Its county seat is Chinook6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 10,979 km² (4,239 mi²). 10,946 km² (4,226 mi²) of it is land and 33 km² (13 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.30% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 7,009 people, 2,501 households, and 1,793 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (2/mi²). There are 2,947 housing units at an average density of 0/km² (1/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 52.58% White, 0.17% African American, 45.37% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 1.54% from two or more races. 1.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,501 households out of which 36.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.30% are married couples living together, 14.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.30% are non-families. 26.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.78 and the average family size is 3.36.

In the county the population is spread out with 32.60% under the age of 18, 8.00% from 18 to 24, 24.80% from 25 to 44, 21.60% from 45 to 64, and 12.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 97.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $25,247, and the median income for a family is $30,616. Males have a median income of $23,627 versus $20,469 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,101. 28.10% of the population and 23.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 36.50% are under the age of 18 and 19.90% are 65 or older.
