DemographicsAs of the census of 2000, there are 43,021 people, 16,803 households, and 12,703 families residing in the town. The population density is 666.0/km² (1,725.1/mi²). There are 17,454 housing units at an average density of 270.2 persons/km² (699.9 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 87.70% White, 4.30% African American, 0.08% Native American, 6.47% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 1.11% from two or more races. 1.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.There are 16,803 households out of which 31.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.1% are married couples living together, 5.7% have a woman whose husband doesn't live with her, and 24.4% are non-families. 21.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 2.97. In the town the population is spread out with 23.8% under the age of 18, 4.2% from 18 to 24, 21.7% from 25 to 44, 32.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.8% who are 65 years of age or older.
