GeographyAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,007 km² (1,161 mi²). 2,980 km² (1,151 mi²) of it is land and 27 km² (10 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.89% water.
DemographicsAs of the census of 2000, there are 62,761 people, 24,453 households, and 17,312 families residing in the county. The population density is 21/km² (54/mi²). There are 28,664 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (25/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.94% White, 0.40% African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. 0.63% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.There are 24,453 households out of which 31.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.40% are married couples living together, 8.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.20% are non-families. 24.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 2.99. In the county, the population is spread out with 25.50% under the age of 18, 6.80% from 18 to 24, 27.20% from 25 to 44, 24.70% from 45 to 64, and 15.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 95.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.10 males.
