Brookhaven is a city located in Lincoln County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 9,861. It is the county seat of Lincoln County6.
Geography
Brookhaven is located at 31°34'54" North, 90°26'34" West (31.581704, -90.442806)1.According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 19.0 km² (7.3 mi²). 19.0 km² (7.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.27% water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 9,861 people, 3,810 households, and 2,480 families residing in the city. The population density is 519.4/km² (1,345.6/mi²). There are 4,240 housing units at an average density of 223.3/km² (578.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 47.55% White, 50.91% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.61% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 0.66% from two or more races. 0.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.There are 3,810 households out of which 31.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.9% are married couples living together, 21.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.9% are non-families. 31.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 3.10.
In the city the population is spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 82.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.3 males.
