Carthage is a city located in Leake County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,637. It is the county seat of Leake County6.
Geography
Carthage is located at 32°44'29" North, 89°32'6" West (32.741504, -89.535134)1.According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 24.3 km² (9.4 mi²). 24.2 km² (9.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.53% water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 4,637 people, 1,490 households, and 1,065 families residing in the city. The population density is 191.5/km² (495.9/mi²). There are 1,654 housing units at an average density of 68.3/km² (176.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 52.86% White, 44.25% African American, 1.04% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.58% from other races, and 0.82% from two or more races. 1.94% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.There are 1,490 households out of which 37.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.8% are married couples living together, 23.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.5% are non-families. 25.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.12.
In the city the population is spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 11.7% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 18.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 98.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.4 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $25,052, and the median income for a family is $30,069. Males have a median income of $27,060 versus $17,280 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,986. 26.8% of the population and 21.5% of families are below the poverty line.
