Claverack is a town located in Columbia County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 6,401.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 124.2 km² (48.0 mi²). 123.4 km² (47.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.8 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.63% water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 6,401 people, 2,485 households, and 1,669 families residing in the town. The population density is 51.9/km² (134.3/mi²). There are 2,839 housing units at an average density of 23.0/km² (59.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 93.95% White, 3.31% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.78% from other races, and 1.33% from two or more races. 2.47% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.There are 2,485 households out of which 29.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.4% are married couples living together, 9.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.8% are non-families. 26.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.96.
In the town the population is spread out with 24.4% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 19.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 100.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.7 males.
