Coal County is a county located in the U.S. State of Oklahoma. As of 2000, the population is 6,031. Its county seat is Coalgate6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,350 km² (521 mi²). 1,342 km² (518 mi²) of it is land and 8 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.59% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 6,031 people, 2,373 households, and 1,653 families residing in the county. The population density is 4/km² (12/mi²). There are 2,744 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (5/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 75.18% White, 0.36% African American, 17.31% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.75% from other races, and 6.09% from two or more races. 2.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,373 households out of which 30.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.20% are married couples living together, 10.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.30% are non-families. 27.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 3.05.

In the county, the population is spread out with 26.60% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 25.30% from 25 to 44, 22.50% from 45 to 64, and 17.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $23,705, and the median income for a family is $28,333. Males have a median income of $22,721 versus $18,419 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,013. 23.10% of the population and 18.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 27.90% are under the age of 18 and 20.90% are 65 or older.
