 Foundation Trilogy

The Foundation trilogy consists of the first three novels of Isaac Asimov's Foundation series:

  • 1951 Foundation
  • 1952 Foundation and Empire
  • 1953 Second Foundation

The contents of the novels were originally published as short stories in the 1940s.

They are the only books that have been awarded the Hugo award for the best science fiction series ever.

An eight-part radio adaptation was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 1973.

Asimov returned to the series in 1982 and wrote four new volumes before he passed away ten years later. These linked the Foundation saga with his earlier Robot novels and Empire novels.
See The Foundation Series for the full list.

It has been speculated (most prominently in the science fiction zines Ansible 172, (November 2001) and Locus[?]) that the Foundation trilogy which has had considerable success in the Middle-East was the source of the name of the terrorist group Al-Qaeda. This speculation however fails to account for the fact that the term Al-Qaeda was first used by the United States to describe followers of Osama bin-Laden[?] and isn't used by that group to refer to itself.
