Ocean County is a county located in the U.S. State of New Jersey. As of 2000, the population is 510,916. Its county seat is Toms River6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,372 km² (916 mi²). 1,648 km² (636 mi²) of it is land and 724 km² (280 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 30.53% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 510,916 people, 200,402 households, and 137,876 families residing in the county. The population density is 310/km² (803/mi²). There are 248,711 housing units at an average density of 151/km² (391/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.05% White, 2.99% African American, 0.14% Native American, 1.28% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.24% from other races, and 1.29% from two or more races. 5.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 200,402 households out of which 28.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.40% are married couples living together, 9.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.20% are non-families. 27.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.30% under the age of 18, 6.60% from 18 to 24, 26.00% from 25 to 44, 21.90% from 45 to 64, and 22.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 90.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $46,443, and the median income for a family is $56,420. Males have a median income of $44,822 versus $30,717 for females. The per capita income for the county is $23,054. 7.00% of the population and 4.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 10.00% are under the age of 18 and 5.60% are 65 or older.
