DemographicsAs of the census of 2000, there are 637 people, 215 households, and 136 families residing in the city. The population density is 299.9/km² (780.0/mi²). There are 244 housing units at an average density of 114.9/km² (298.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 38.62% White, 59.81% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.26% from other races, and 0.31% from two or more races. 2.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.There are 215 households out of which 25.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.7% are married couples living together, 24.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.3% are non-families. 34.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 3.31. In the city the population is spread out with 24.6% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 16.5% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 30.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 69.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 58.9 males. The median income for a household in the city is $26,719, and the median income for a family is $29,375. Males have a median income of $24,375 versus $16,406 for females. The per capita income for the city is $11,602. 25.6% of the population and 22.2% of families are below the poverty line.
